May 2006: Gabriel House Orphanage (Maneadero, Mexico)
USU students and faculty from the Communicative Disorders program visited Gabriel House, a non-profit Christian home dedicated to caring for children with disabilities in Mexico. The USU AT Lab was used by the students to design and make a wide range of adapted communication systems, toys, games, books to take to the orphans in Mexico.
- Student and faculty were in Mexico for 4 days, May 5-9
- 35 children with a variety of developmental disabilities were served
- 12 senior students in an AT class did AT assessments
- Students worked all day providing assessments and then in the evenings and late into the night specializing necessary AT devices
- AT Lab was used to repair wheelchairs and make wheelchair trays
- Everything made in AT Lab was made possible by donations from the community to purchase materials
