Adapted Bed
Designed & built by Stephanie Holt and Steve Sjoblom
Directed & built by Dr. Jay Hicken
A customized bed was built for a child with multiple disabilities. The bed allows his parents to more easily care for and transfer him from his wheelchair to his bed, now and in the future as he grows.
- Built-in adaptations include:
- High railings to prevent falling out of bed
- Large drawers to store and hide nighttime breathing equipment
- Sides of the bed collapse and slide into the bed frame, allowing complete access to Braxton
- A safe distance between the slats of the railings was researched and calculated to prevent injury
- Birch wood was used, because it is hard and durable and diminishes the appearance of a hospital environment
Stephanie Holt entered the project and took sixth place in the 26th Annual RESNA Student Design Competition for assistive technology, a national competition.
